NCTM Standards 2000

Communication can be a powerful learning tool. When students share their ideas about math, they can clarify and refine their thinking. You can help your students start learning to communicate mathematically by asking them to "think out loud" and explain their ideas. Later, they will be able to describe their ideas more precisely, using the appropriate mathematical terms.
